Description

Wireless 5G networks are expected to provide data rates of up to tens of gigabits per second. These networks will be able to support a large number of novel scenarios and applications with higher frequency and much better reliability. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, resources, technologies, and research towards new technological concepts are needed. Hence, innovative joint investigation, assessment, and design of theoretical models, aligned and supported by experimental validation, are required. In order to support successful design, accurate simulation models become a crucial part of the process.

Additionally, accurate channel characterization and modeling are important to evaluate these new technologies and the system performance at higher frequencies, including millimeter wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) or sub-Terahertz (sub-THz) bands. On the other hand, new frequency bands require components and structures in integration with electrically large antenna arrays. In order to overcome a low directivity of the omnidirectional THz band antennas, small physical antenna size allows implementation of large number of antenna elements to a very small footprint. Some of the biggest challenges are to model the interaction of nearby antenna elements with RF front-ends and develop radically new approaches for antenna array pattern synthesis.

This special issue welcomes the submission of research and review articles highlighting new approaches to model, simulate, design, and analyze the characteristics of future wireless ultrahigh data speed communication system applications and technologies. Articles focusing on radio channel modelling, antennas and antenna arrays, pattern synthesis, and combination of these towards next generation (5G/6G) wireless communications systems will be considered.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Simulation, design, measurement, and analysis of antennas and antenna arrays
  • Electrically large antenna arrays with pencil beam characteristics
  • Machine learning based channel modeling, and simulations
  • Radio propagation measurement, modeling, and simulations
  • Artificial intelligence in antenna design
