MIMO Antennas in Radar Applications
Description
Conventional single-antenna radar is inherently limited in meeting the rising demands of future radar applications. Innovative radar technologies are thus needed to be developed. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas provide new opportunities to develop new radar technologies and applications. MIMO radar allows for simultaneous transmission and reception by multiple antennas or channels, compared to conventional radar which employs only a single antenna. This offers a potential to gather additional information and to benefit from this information to overcome the restrictions of conventional radars. Multiple antennas can be placed either in a monostatic platform or in distributed platforms. We thus can obtain increased system flexibility and better system performance by employing multiple antennas. Although MIMO antennas in radar signal detection applications have received much attention in recent years, there appears to be little work done in applying MIMO antennas to radar imaging applications. On these observations, we plan to launch a special issue on MIMO antennas in radar applications.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand MIMO radar underling wireless propagating characteristics, develop new MIMO radar technologies, and evaluate MIMO radar applications. We are interested in articles that explore technology and application aspects of MIMO antennas in radars, particularly for imaging applications. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Recent advances of MIMO antennas in radar applications
- Advances in MIMO radar
- MIMO antenna array calibration
- MIMO synthetic aperture radar (SAR)
- MIMO antennas design and arrangement
- MIMO waveform diversity and design
- RF beam forming
- Role of MIMO antennas in radar imaging
- Role of MIMO antennas in remote sensing
