Illustration of the “missing disk” case. This figure shows the intensity profile of a T1-weighted image along the spine (blue) and the estimated peaks (red). The second peak has been set to prob_location because the cross-correlation between the pattern and the intensity profile was too low. This can happen in case of artifact (motion, susceptibility caused by metallic implant), low SNR, or pathology such as degenerated disk.
