Assessment of Bone Mineral Density in Male Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease by DXA and Quantitative Computed Tomography

(a) DXA image of a lumbar spine with mild scoliosis in a male patient with COPD. DXA measurement of the L2 vertebra was consistent with normal BMD (1.054 g/cm2, -score −0.4). (b) QCT measurement of L2 vertebra (56.3 mg/cm3) was consistent with osteoporosis. The patient also had a vertebral wedge deformity at T12. Notable abdominal aortic calcifications are noted in axial CT image that may have contributed to the discrepancy of the results.
