We investigate when a Nagata ring <mml:math alttext="$R(X)$" id="E1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>R</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>X</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math> can be written as a directed union of Artinian subrings. For a family of zero-dimensional rings <mml:math alttext="$\{R_{\alpha}\}_{\alpha\in A}$" id="E2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mo>{</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>R</mml:mi><mml:mi>&#x3B1;</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow><mml:mo>}</mml:mo></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>&#x3B1;</mml:mi><mml:mo>&#x2208;</mml:mo><mml:mi>A</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math>, we show that <mml:math alttext="$\prod_{\alpha\in A}R_{\alpha}(X_{\alpha})$" id="E3" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mo>&#x220F;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mi>&#x3B1;</mml:mi><mml:mo>&#x2208;</mml:mo><mml:mi>A</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:msub><mml:mi>R</mml:mi><mml:mi>&#x3B1;</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>X</mml:mi><mml:mi>&#x3B1;</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math> is not a directed sum of Artinian subrings.
