We investigate necessary and sufficient conditions
under which a ring satisfies unit <mml:math alttext="$1$" id="E2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:math>-stable range
for an ideal. As an application, we prove that <mml:math alttext="$R$" id="E3" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>R</mml:mi></mml:math>
