Overview of Cell Death Mechanisms Induced by Rose Bengal Acetate-Photodynamic Therapy

Figure 1

The mechanism of PhotoDynamic Therapy action on cancer cells. Upon irradiation with visible light of a specific wavelength, the Photosensitizer (PS) is excited from a ground state to an excited state, which transfers its energy to tissue ground state triplet oxygen producing singlet oxygen (1O2), a very reactive chemical specie able to destroy a tumour by multifactorial mechanisms. PDT can directly trigger tumour cells death by induction of apoptosis, autophagy, and necrosis, damage the vasculature, induce hypoxia, and rapidly recruit immune cells, such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and granulocytes.
