Influence of Local Wind Conditions on the Flight Speed of the Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo

Figure 3

Two examples of wind conditions and GPS positions. The Bird A encountered different wind conditions between outward and homing trips in (a) Trip no. 2 and (b) Trip no. 6, respectively. The star indicates the Unoyama breeding colony. The dots show the GPS positions that were interpolated at 1 min to produce a clearer display and the colour indicates the ground speed of the bird. Arrows indicate travel direction. The two rose plots on each panel show the frequency of occurrence of wind direction, which is the direction from which the wind was blowing (not where it was blowing to), and wind speed (colour) during outward and homing flights.
