Temporal Change in Fur Color in Museum Specimens of Mammals: Reddish-Brown Species Get Redder with Storage Time

Scans of hair samples taken from an older chipmunk specimen and a newer chipmunk specimen, to show differences in color. Hair samples were scanned on a flatbed scanner with no color correction. Samples were cut from the agouti fur on the dorsum of the specimens. Note the red coloring of the fine body hair in the older specimen, compared to the newer specimen (white arrows) and that there is no breakage of hair tips in the older specimen (black arrows).
