Hub-and-spoke structure and alternative routes: there exists a regular route from Pittsburgh to San Francisco with New York City and Los Angeles as hubs. If hub of New York City is disrupted, an alternative route “Pittsburgh Chicago Los Angeles San Francisco” can be used. Note that, the Los Angeles hub is still in the alternative route.
