Study on Occupancy Behaviors of Passengers in the Subway Cabin: An Observation in Chengdu, China

Table 2

Calculation method of the cabin load.

Measurement basisIndexMethod of calculation

Area-basedStanding loadThe number of standing passengers is divided by the cabin capacity. (The number of passengers allowed to stand per square meter is multiplied by the area.)
Passengers in excess of capacity (PIXC)The difference between the number of passengers and the capacity of the cabin is divided by the number of passengers.

Seat-basedSeat load factorThe number of passengers is divided by the number of seats.
Seat densityThe ratio of the number of passengers in the same row of seats to the number of seats.
The percentage of standard class passengers standingThe method is extended from that of PIXC: the difference between the number of passengers and the number of seats in the cabin is divided by the number of passengers.

Based on area and seatLoad level at LOSThe load level of six grades, from A to F, is defined by the seat load factor and per capita standing area.
