Description

Sustainability has been considered as an important issue in all aspects of society, as well as in freight transportation. The main challenges that come with this include increasing air pollution, major accidents caused by trucks, and applications of Intelligent Technology (IT) in freight transportation. In this context, current research aims to explore these problems and find advanced alternatives for sustainable freight transportation.

The question of what makes freight transportation sustainable covers a wide variety of studies ranging from empirical research efforts to experimental ones: theoretical and innovative research into the analysis, design, operations, and planning of multimodal transport, as well as considering safety, emissions, driving behavior, and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Intelligent Communication Technology (ICT).

This special issue welcomes original research and review articles focused on the above topics, as well as structural equation models, planning models, statistical analyses, and either simulation-based or computational approaches. Data can be collected with surveys or from databases. We encourage any other research themes that investigate sustainable freight transportation and also welcome original research outcomes and review articles which clarify the current state-of-the-art and practice for freight transportation.

  • Vehicle-technology innovations and initiatives related to ICT and ITS applications
  • Urban freight transport
  • Strategies to enhance freight transportation safety
  • Multimodal transport networks planning
  • Operation and management of heavy trucks in Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) environments
  • Analysis of emission and dispersion in freight movements
  • Analysis of risk driving behavior of freight drivers
  • Evaluation and assessment of freight driving assistance systems
  • Safety evaluation for freight transportation network/paths
  • Analysis of the severity of freight vehicle crashes
  • Models to identify factors contributing to freight vehicle crashes
  • Risk mitigation of hazardous material transportation
