Intelligent Traffic Control and Management in Urban Areas

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

It is estimated that by 2050 there will be 9.7 billion people in the world—70% of whom will live in cities—and the global economy is expected to triple its size, leading to more than a doubling of road travel. Traffic control and management in urban areas makes it possible to contain the effects arising from the increase in costs associated with traffic congestion, and the development of innovative technologies and new efficient communication systems provides a great boost to the use of intelligent systems for traffic control and management.

With the spread of Internet of Things applications and the growing use of connected systems such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), the optimization of road mobility performance is increasingly more focused, especially in urban areas. New research is emerging in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that emphasizes the importance of big data generated by vehicles to ensure better traffic control and management.

This Special Issue aims to cover recent methodological advances in traffic control and management in urban areas which use big data to optimize strategies and make enhancements to urban road network performance. Original research and review articles related to ITS frameworks and applications for traffic control and management systems will be considered. All contributions on theoretical aspects, models, simulation, and practical experimentations are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cooperative systems in urban traffic management
  • Automated traffic enforcement systems for controlling violations in urban areas
  • Car park guidance systems in urban controlled areas (on-street and off-street)
  • Application of computer vision and image processing techniques in intelligent and automated traffic control system in urban areas
  • Dynamic traffic light control systems in urban road networks
  • Intelligent traffic control systems for emergency vehicles in urban areas
  • Urban road traffic management systems based on floating car data
  • Sensor technologies for intelligent transportation systems in urban road networks
  • Urban road pricing
