Postulated involvement of polyoxidic methionine derivative 5 as an ozonelike oxidant in the conversion of vinylbenzoic acid 10 to 4-carboxybenzaldehyde 12, via dioxetane 14 or ozonide 15; and the direct reaction of vinylbenzoic acid 10 with singlet oxygen to form peroxide 10 which does not produce 4-carboxybenzaldehyde 12.
