The effect of &#x3B3;–radiation on colour intensity of aqueous solution of Brilliant Green has been investigated at two different concentrations. The degradation of Brilliant Green (BG) has also been investigated in presence of suspended ZnO, by adding different amounts of ZnO. Simultaneously the conductance and pH of each solution system were measured before and after &#x3B3;-irradiation. All the &#x3B3;–irradiations were performed at a dose rate of 0.60 kGyhr-1 in GC-900. The maximum dose required for the complete degradation of the dye was found to be 0.39 kGy. G(-dye) values were found to decrease with increase in gamma dose and were in the range 4.26 - 12.81. The conductance (7.6 - 25.3 &#x3BC;S) and pH values increased marginally with dose for both the concentrations. The rate of decolouration was found to be high at lower doses and the efficiency of dye removal was higher at low concentration of the dye. This may be attributed to the presence of reaction by-products from the destruction of parent compound build up and compete for reaction intermediate species. The rate of reaction and rate constants were calculated and it was found that the degradation reaction follows first order kinetics. It was found that the decolouration percentage was more in dye systems in absence of ZnO.

Gamma Radiolysis Studies of Aqueous Solution of Brilliant Green Dye

A heterocyclic imidazoline, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-2-imidazolines (TMP2I) was tested for its corrosion inhibition in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M HCl using weight loss, Tafel polarisation and electrochemical impedance techniques. The results show that the inhibition efficiency increases with the increase in concentration of TMP2I and the higher efficiency of about 98% is obtained in both the acid media at 20 ppm. The adsorption of TMP2I obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm and occurs spontaneously. Cathodic and anodic polarization curves of mild steel in the presence of different concentrations of TMP2I at 30 0C reveal that it is a mixed type of inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance studies reveal that the system follows mixed mode of inhibition. The surface morphology of the mild steel specimens was evaluated using SEM images

Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel in Acid Solution by 3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenyl-2-imidazolines

Application of solid support, solvent free reaction condition and a dynamic microwave power system in the chemical synthesis of some novel 1, 3-diaryl-propenones has been described. A series of chalcones (3a-h) were synthesized by the condensation of 4-hydroxy-3,5-dinitroacetophenone with various substituted aromatic aldehydes in presence of montmorrilonite K10 as a catalyst and solid support media under microwave irradiation. The protocol offers several advantages such as simple procedure, fast reaction rate, mild reaction condition, eco-friendly and improved yield as compared to conventional methods. These compounds have been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against different microorganisms. The structures of novel synthesized compounds have been established on the basis of elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and IR spectral data.

Microwave Induced Improved Synthesis of Some Novel Substituted 1, 3-Diarylpropenones and their Antimicrobial Activity

A new series of ketoazomethines were synthesized by condensation of phenyl glyoxal (prepared by partial oxidation of acetophenone) with various p-substituted anilines viz. p-Cl, p-Br, p-NO2, p-(C2H5)2N and p-CH3. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and H1 NMR. The synthesized ketoazomethines were screened for their antifungal acsutivity against hazardous fungi namely Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria brassicola, Sclerotium and Pythium.

Antifungal Activities of Ketoazomethines of Phenyl Glyoxal and p-Substituted Anilines

The kinetics of oxidation of (phenylthio)acetic acid (PTAA) by N-Bromophthalimide (NBP) in acetonitrile-water solvent mixture at 298 K in the presence of perchloric acid has been followed potentiometrically. The reaction is first-order each in NBP and PTAA and inverse fractional-order in H+. Also, it has been found that the reaction rate is not affected by changes in ionic strength of the reaction medium or by the addition of chemicals such as phthalimide, acrylonitrile and potassium bromide. However, an increase in the water content of the solvent mixture causes an increase in the rate of reaction. These observations have been well analyzed in favour of a SN2-type mechanism, involving NBP itself as the reactive species. Effect of substituents on the reaction rate has been analysed by employing various (p-sustituted phenylthio)acetic acids. The electron-releasing substituent in the phenyl ring of PTAA accelerates the reaction rate while the electron-withdrawing substituent retards the rate. The excellently linear Hammett plot yields a large negative ρ value, supporting the involvement a bromosulphonium ion intermediate in the rate-determining step.
