Combating Noncommunicable Diseases such as Cancer and Liver Toxicities Using Natural Products

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Toxins and chemicals play an important role in the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) worldwide. The four main types of NCDs, namely, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, and diabetes, result in a huge number of deaths annually. Along with them, inflammatory diseases and liver toxicities caused by different toxins and chemicals are arising in a rapid manner contributing to the increase in deaths. Present NCD therapeutic drugs sometimes exert detrimental side effects on the human body leading to their limited use. So, the scientific community is facing a big challenge to develop better and safer therapeutics using natural products not only from medicinal plants but also from other natural sources like microorganisms, algae, and lichens.

In this special issue, we invite authors to submit their original research exploring mechanisms for bioactivity of active compounds isolated from natural sources, such as algae, lichens, and medicinal plants against cancer and liver toxicities. This special issue also focuses on the active compounds isolated from natural resources which target inflammatory components and processes engaged during cancer development and liver toxicities. The findings reported in this special issue highly encourage the use of cell lines as well as animal models.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activities of standardized crude extracts from natural sources
  • Toxins and chemical induced liver toxicities and the role of active natural product research to alleviate toxic conditions
  • Isolation and structural characterization of biologically important active compounds from natural sources for anti-cancer and antitoxicity applications
  • Use of active compounds from natural sources for treating cancers and inflammation
  • Pharmacokinetic and toxicological studies of naturally occurring active compounds for use or currently used as anticancer agents or in the treatment of liver toxicity
