High Glucose Increases Metallothionein Expression in Renal Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells

MT-1/-2 expression in podocytes and proximal tubular cells of the kidney. Immunofluorescent staining was performed as described in Materials and Methods. Eight weeks after inducing diabetes, MT-1/-2 was predominantly expressed in the proximal tubular epithelial cells of the kidney (b) and weakly expressed in podocytes (d) in the kidney of diabetic rats. In control rats, MT-1/-2 was weakly expressed in proximal tubular epithelial cells (a), but hardly in the podocytes (c). AQP1: aquaporin 1, MT: MT-1/-2.
