Blood glucose levels in PO and SPD rats after diabetes induction. (a) Gradual increase of blood glucose concentrations after induction of type 2 DM in PO rats by HE diet (full circles). Mild hyperglycemia of approximately 300 mg/dL was observed after 4 weeks and remained stable thereafter as opposed to normoglycemic control animals (empty circles) (, ). (b) Severe stable hyperglycemia around 450 mg/dL was established one week after single STZ treatment of SPD rats (full circles) as opposed to untreated animals (empty circles) ().
