Role of PPARγ in vascular development. (a) Expression of PPARγ (PPARγ+/+) is necessary for proper angiogenesis during embryogenesis. (b) PPARγ knockout (PPARγ−/−) mice are embryonically lethal by E10.0 due to the impaired placental vascularization. (c) Deletion of PPARγ in the embryo, but not in the trophoblast, or (d) specifically in the endothelial cells does not disturb angiogenesis and leads to the generation of viable pups.
