The SAS 9.2 VARCLUS procedure (SAS Inst., Inc., Cary, NC) was applied to standardized log data to divide the 36 species into disjoint clusters such that each species belonged to one and only one internally homogeneous cluster. All species began in a single cluster, which was split iteratively to maximize the variance accounted for by the cluster components. Splitting continued until the eigenvalue associated with each cluster’s second principal component reached the criterion of a maximum of 1.0.
