Incorporating Environmental Health in Clinical Medicine

Description

The area of environmental health sciences continues to expand at an impressive rate. With the recognition that recent and emerging changes in the external environment have the potential to influence genetic function, hormone biology, as well as other important physiological parameters, the significance of environmental medicine on individual and population health is rapidly becoming a major area of study for government and public health officials. Extensive research by scientists as well as governments has prompted several scientific and leading public health journals to report on the issue of the impacts of environmental determinants on human health.

The main focus of this special issue will be the translation of emerging scientific knowledge in environmental health sciences into practical and useful information for clinical medicine as well as public health policy. The disciplines of scientific research, clinical practice, and public policy need to be integrated and to support each other in this important field of science. The special issue will become an international forum for researchers to summarize the most recent developments and ideas in the field, with a special emphasis given to how emerging knowledge can be translated into clinical practice and public policy. As it is recognized that the environmental domain of human health includes adverse exposures, as well as alterations in endogenous human biochemistry, the topics to be covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Adverse chemical exposures and human health
  • Adverse biological exposures (such as mold) and human health
  • Electromagnetic radiation exposure and human health
  • Human nutrition and biochemistry relating to environmental health sciences
  • Investigations to assess exposures and bioaccumulated toxicants
  • Assessment of body burden of bioaccumulated toxicants
  • Interventions to address bioaccumulated toxicants
  • Public policy issues related to human health and the environment
  • Environmental design and architecture
  • Industry and human health
  • Government regulation and adverse human exposures
  • Precautionary principle
  • Effective knowledge translation of environmental science, and impediments to the same
  • Public education regarding environmental health sciences
  • Radiation exposure and human health
  • Physical activity and detoxification
  • Personal lifestyles and susceptibility to environmental hazards
  • Toxicants as determinants of obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes
  • Future strategies

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jeph/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
