The cellular and molecular mechanisms of the potential roles of berberine on NAFLD. Berberine reduces the expression of inflammatory factors by preventing the expression of NF-κB and TLR-4 pathways. Berberine activates transcription factor Nrf-2 expression and increases nuclear translocation and subsequent antioxidant-responsive element (ARE) binding; therefore, protecting cells against oxidative stress damage by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes.
