Healthcare of Things and Big Data for Healthcare Engineering

Description

In today's digital and computing world, information increases rapidly. The healthcare system is facing digital transformations with augmentation in the use of healthcare medical information systems, electronic medical records, wearable and smart devices, and handheld devices. Devices such as remote sensors and wearable technologies continuously produce abundant heterogeneous big data. Big data is the data with diversity, scale, and complexity that requires new structure, algorithms, techniques, and analytics to facilitate the management, visualization, and retrieval of hidden information. Big data has received attention in many different fields, such as social media, banking operations, production of healthcare appliances, and satellite imaging. The data is stored in a vastly organized layout to visualize contents and information. Health education is needed to tackle and extract meaningful insight from such data.

In the year 2020, it is estimated that 50 billion devices are linked to the web. As a consequence of this technological uprising, millions of people are generating a huge amount of data through the increased use of such devices. Devices such as remote sensors continuously produce many heterogeneous data that is in an unstructured or structured form. Usually, data is stored in a highly structured layout to exploit its informational contents. However, current data volumes are driven by both unstructured and semi-structured data. The expansion in data storage and mining technology enables the preservation of these increased volumes of data. Recent speedy growth in healthcare and the development of computation in the field of healthcare has enabled researchers and practitioners to mine and visualize new insights with the use of modern devices and technologies.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collate articles describing emerging technologies, tools, and techniques in the field of healthcare of things and big data to aid doctors and practitioners in the decision-making process. Original research and review articles are welcome.
