Image Processing in Ophthalmology

Description

Image processing is now an indispensable element occurring in almost every field of life. Image processing is particularly useful in medicine. It provides not only qualitative information (as it has been so far) but also quantitative information. This information applies to both the course of the disease and quantitative assessment of the progress of its treatment. Quantitative information allows for more precise treatment and selection of drugs. This type of image analysis and processing algorithms is also used in ophthalmology. However, regardless of the field of medicine, the algorithms must be profiled to a specific application and population. On the other hand, every software application should be versatile enough to allow for the analysis of considerable interindividual variability in patients. This result can only be achieved by narrowing the search area of the analysis methods to, for example, those proposed in this special edition devoted to image processing in ophthalmology.

The subject of this special issue relates to modern methods of image analysis and processing characterized by repeatability of measurements, low sensitivity to changing parameters (such as the dependence of the results on the operator, the method of performing an examination, and the type of device on which the examination was performed). Additionally, attachments in the form of a source code of the proposed algorithm/software or videos are most welcome. The area of this special issue will certainly be of interest to bioengineers, ophthalmologists (as well as doctors of other specializations), computer scientists, graduate students, and senior students wishing to expand their knowledge related to modern methods of image analysis and processing used in ophthalmology.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Algorithms for image analysis and processing in ophthalmology
  • New methods of image processing in the analysis of solid dosage forms
  • Algorithms for image analysis and combination of pattern classifiers with application
