Immune and Inflammatory-Mediated Disorders: From Bench to Bedside

Description

The immune system consists of many biological structures (molecules and cells) that act in a coordinated manner to protect the organism against disease and are distributed in every tissue of the body. Inflammation is the central driving force in diseases affecting nearly all organs and systems of the body including skin, gut, lungs, brain, and cardiovascular system and the mononuclear phagocyte lineage plays a pivotal role in innate immunity. Age- and gender-related differences in immune response contribute to increasing the complexity in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the immune- and inflammatory-mediated disorders.

Major scientific progresses result from the interface of high-throughput technologies for immunological research, cellular and animal models, pharmacology, and clinical practice.

The aim of this special issue is to highlight the achievements obtained in the basic, translational, and clinical immunology. We invite authors to submit high-quality original research and review articles addressing the role of monocytes/macrophages and their tissue-differentiated derivatives, as well as immune mediators in inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases. In particular, the issue will focus on the effects of aging, gender, and gut microbiota in the development of those disorders. New therapeutic strategies will be also included in the issue.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory- and immune-mediated disorders
    • Crosstalk between cells of innate immunity
    • Cytokines/chemokines and receptor activation
    • Epigenetic modifications
  • Environmental and life style influences on inflammatory- and immune-mediated disorders
    • Aging
    • Gender
    • Gut microbiota
    • Obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • Translating immunology
    • Interplay between inflammation and chronic/degenerative diseases
    • Advances and future insights in therapeutic interventions
