oxLDL indices internalization of GM1. Typical images of fluorescently labeled CTx staining in nonpermeabilized control, oxLDL-, and MβCD-treated bovine aortic endothelial cells showing the surface expression of GM1 on the plasma membrane. Similar to the earlier studies, cells were exposed to 10 μg/mL oxLDL for 1 h at 37°C but the degree of LDL oxidation was a little lower (10–15 nmol/mg TBARS). For cholesterol depletion, cells were treated with 5 mM MβCD for 1 hour, a treatment that typically decreases cellular cholesterol level by 50%. Adapted from [22].
