Synthesis of Nanostructured Nanoclay-Zirconia Multilayers: a Feasibility Study

(a) The structure of 2 : 1 clay nanoplatelets exfoliated from MMT. (b) A targeted multilayer structure to be synthesized using a new LBL assembling technique via making use of the intrinsic negative surface charges and unique platy shape of nanoclays (as shown in (a)). In principle, the thickness and chemical composition of each nanometer-thick oxide layer can be tuned individually, offering versatility in engineering these nanostructured films with a wide range of potential applications to be explored in future studies.
