In humid air, negatively charged iron metal nanoparticles are continuously re-electrohydrated by surrounding molecules of water vapour, and so they can be spontaneously transformed into the iron/air core-shell nanobatteries, which are periodically short-circuited by the intraparticle electron emission breakdowns.
