Adhesion Mechanism of Water Droplets on Hierarchically Rough Superhydrophobic Rose Petal Surface

Shape of the fine structures on superhydrophobic surfaces affect the liquid-solid contact area and water droplet adhesion. A spiky-like structure reduces the liquid-solid contact area effectively (a). When the structure gets rounder the liquid-solid contact area increases (a–c), and can become much larger in comparison with the smooth surface. Nubby structure (d) has remarkably smaller liquid-solid contact area compared to grooved structure (e).
