Figure 1: Fructose metabolism. Fructose is primarily metabolized to fructose-1-phosphate by KHK due to its lower Km for fructose compared with hexokinase. Uncontrolled consumption of ATP leads to intracellular phosphate depletion and activation of AMP deaminase leading to the increased production of uric acid. Fructose-1-phosphate is further metabolized by aldolase B and triokinase to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate.
