Visible Discrimination of Broadband Infrared Light by Dye-Enhanced Upconversion in Lanthanide-Doped Nanocrystals

Normalized absorption and emission spectra of the NHS-functionalized form of DyL800 dye (a) and DY-831 dye (b) in DMSO solvent. At high concentrations, these dyes appear dark green or black to the eye. At concentrations resulting in peak attenuation of 90% in the infrared, they are transparent in the visible.
