Innovations in Imaging for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Liver Lesions

Description

In the past years, new diagnostic as well as interventional options, in terms of techniques as well as new devices or technological improvements, have emerged for patients with hepatic lesions. In detail, CEUS, CT, or MRI with new contrast medium/sequences allowed to improve detection, characterization, as well as planning for eventual treatment and evaluation of results. On the other hand, there have been several advances in treating liver lesions. Nonsurgical locoregional treatments represent feasible, safe, and effective options for patients with primary as well as secondary liver lesions.

The role of image-guided therapy was also highlighted by the advent of immunotherapy, which is revolutionizing cancer care. It is becoming quite clear that the synergic action of locoregional treatments and immunotherapy may lead to the development of novel treatment strategies.

This special issue welcomes articles on innovations in diagnostic and intervention with a multidisciplinary approach that could lead to the development of predictive and personalized therapies for effective and affordable cancer care. We encourage the submission of original research articles addressing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies using minimally invasive locoregional procedures to treat liver lesions. Updates on phase II trials and review articles which describe the current state of the art are especially welcomed.

  • Software-guided percutaneous treatments (ablation/ electrochemotherapy/electrogentherapy/combined procedures) of primary and secondary liver tumors
  • Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CB-CT) for intraprocedural three-dimensional volumetric imaging during transarterial procedure (embolization/chemoembolization/radioembolization)
  • Contrast Enhanced Ultrasonography (US)
  • Novel types of contrast medium and new sequences in liver MR imaging
  • Imaging and Stereotactic Radiotherapy/ Brachytherapy
