Ocular Surface and Anterior Chamber Trauma, Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Ocular trauma is very common in everyday practice. Different mechanisms, depending on causative factors, play important roles in its pathology. Fast and exact diagnosis is necessary to minimize complications. In many cases, despite rapid treatment, long-term complications cannot be avoided, which demands intensive medical and surgical approaches.

A precise diagnosis is crucial, and is frequently aided by the use imaging of anterior and posterior segments of the eye. This facilitates assessment of the prognosis and range of treatment, which often consists of reconstruction of the ocular surface with the use of allogeneic tissues and implants. Recent advances in ocular diagnostics and imaging techniques allow for a better understanding of the mechanisms of eye globe trauma. The use of mainly anterior segment imaging technologies, like optical coherence tomography, ultrasound biomicroscopy, and corneal topography aids in deciding which kind of surgery, and at what moment in time, will be the most appropriate.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collate research regarding methods of surgical treatment of the ocular surface and anterior chamber structures. Review articles describing the state of the art are also welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Mechanisms of ocular surface trauma and primary medical approach
  • Primary surgical treatment in ocular surface injury
  • Consecutive surgical treatment in ocular trauma
  • Imaging of the anterior segment of the eye post ocular trauma
  • New diagnostic methods in ocular surface injuries
  • New targeted diagnostic and therapeutic approaches
