Ink-Jet Printing: Perfect Tool for Cantilever Array Sensor Preparation for Microbial Growth Detection

Figure 1

(a) Illustration of autodrop ink-jet spotting system for cantilever array functionalisation. Piezo-driven micropipette is mounted on a positioning system which has a positional accuracy of 1 μm in all directions. (b) Viable E. coli cells are able to be inoculated by spotting on an agar plate in a controlled manner. The developing colonies form the CRANN Logo after an incubation of 18 hours at 35°C. Scale bar 5 mm. The different optical appearance of the individual E. coli colonies spotted is a result of different rates of metabolism which lead to different colouring.
