Sensors and Applications in Agricultural and Environmental Monitoring

Description

The continuous advance in sensors and sensing systems has a strong impact on agriculture and environment monitoring. The effect of sensors applications ranged from fine scales on a process of a plant cell to large scales such as the global remote sensing survey of agriculture, grassland, and forests. In recent years, manufacturers of agricultural and environmental machinery are incorporating an increasing amount of advanced sensor technology in their precision farming and environmental equipment, such as portable photosynthesis system, soil carbon flux monitoring, time domain reflectometry, and soil salinity monitor.

This special issue emphasizes the practical applications of sensors in each area of agricultural and environmental monitoring. High quality research papers dealing with any aspect of agricultural and environmental monitoring are encouraged. Preference is given to papers from experimental and observational research at the field, system, or landscape level, from studies that enhance our understanding of sensors and applications of agricultural and environmental monitoring, and papers that bridge scientific disciplines and integrate knowledge. Observing and evaluating the agricultural and environmental quality by using remote sensing technology are also the interests of this issue. The journal examines various sensors to estimate exposure at both the individual and population levels and also focuses on the development of sensors related to the management of various renewable natural resources in, for instance, agriculture, grassland, and forests. This special issue will consider original research and review articles reporting theoretical, simulation, or experimental study related to sensors in agricultural and environmental monitoring and landscape-level observation by using remote sensing technologies.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Sensors and applications in farming practices
  • Crop growth estimation using optical remote sensing data
  • The response of animals, plants, and microorganisms to environmental change by sensor technologies
  • Sensors and applications in molecular biology
  • Sensors and applications in natural environment, including land, air, and water
  • Global and regional observation on the earth environment (such as carbon cycle and urban heat island effect) and its technical challenges
  • Monitoring/environmental analysis
