Advanced Sensor Technologies in Agricultural, Environmental, and Ecological Engineering 2021

Description

The continuous advancements in design, performance, and application of sensors and sensing systems have a strong impact on agricultural, environmental, and ecological engineering. The applications of sensors range from fine scales on a process of a plant cell to large scales such as the global remote sensing survey of agriculture, grassland, and forests. In recent years, manufacturers of agricultural, environmental and ecological machinery have been incorporating an increasing amount of advanced sensor technology into their precision farming and environmental equipment, such as portable photosynthesis systems, soil carbon flux monitoring, time domain reflectometry, and soil salinity monitoring.

In recent years, the applications of sensors in agricultural, environmental, and ecological engineering have been greatly improved. For example, sensors in portable photosynthesis systems are widely used for analyzing photosynthesis and related mechanisms. These practices can be very useful in monitoring a range of plants under various conditions, such as biotic or abiotic stress, base manure, density, temperature, light, moisture, and nutrient availability. Nevertheless, the study of the applications of sensors in agricultural, environmental, and ecological engineering is relatively weak. Strengthening these studies will inevitably lead to a revolution in these fields.

This Special Issue will emphasize the practical applications of sensors in each area of agricultural, environmental, and ecological engineering. High quality research papers dealing with any aspect of agricultural, environmental, and ecological monitoring are encouraged. Preference is given to papers from experimental and observational research at the field, system, or landscape level, from studies that enhance our understanding of sensors and applications of agricultural, environmental, and ecological monitoring, and papers that bridge scientific disciplines and integrate knowledge. Observing and evaluating the agricultural, environmental, and ecological quality by using remote sensing technology are also of interest for this Issue. It will examine various sensors to estimate exposure at both the individual and population levels and also focuses on the development of sensors related to the management of various renewable natural resources in, for instance, agriculture, grassland, and forests. This Special Issue will consider original research and review articles reporting theoretical, simulation, or experimental studies related to monitoring and landscape-level observation by using remote sensing technologies.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Sensors and applications in farming practices
  • Sensors and applications in plant growth, development and stored
  • Crop growth estimation using optical remote sensing data
  • The response of animals, plants, and microorganisms to environmental changes, observed, recorded, or monitored by sensor technologies
  • Sensors and applications in natural environments, including land, air, and water (including stream, river, reservoir, wetland, and sea)
  • Sensors and applications in agricultural, environmental, and ecological engineering from both field and laboratory
  • Sensors and applications in molecular biology
  • Sensors and applications in metabolite detection
  • Global and regional observations on the earth’s environment (such as the carbon cycle, urban heat island effect, urban land cover, etc.) and the resulting technical challenges
  • Environmental monitoring, modelling, and impact analysis
