Function of Serum Complement in Drinking Water Arsenic Toxicity

Figure 1

Number of Escherichia coli DH5α colonies (million cfu/mL) grown on agar plates from the bacterial cell suspension in PBS (Medium) and after the action of serum complements from healthy controls and arsenic patients. Before plating, the bacterial cell suspensions were diluted with PBS to 1 : 50,000 in Medium, and 1 : 10,000 both for serum samples from control subjects and arsenic patients. Compared with the Medium, complements from both the sera exhibited highly significant bacteriolytic effects ( 𝑃 < 0 . 0 0 1 ), while complements from arsenic patients showed significantly diminished bacteriolytic effects compared to the control subjects ( 𝑃 < 0 . 0 0 1 ).
