Modulating Thyroid Hormone Levels in Adult Mice: Impact on Behavior and Compensatory Brain Changes

Timeline and schematic summary of the experiments. Middle-aged mice were treated with either levothyroxine (TH, 20 µg/mL) or a combination of PTU (0.15%) and methimazole (0.02%) starting at 14 months and continuing for 4 months. Body weight was measured at least weekly throughout. Serum TH was measured at baseline, 2 months, and 4 months. General activity was tested at 2 and 4 months. Blood glucose and water/food consumption were determined at 3 months of treatment. At endpoint, tissue weights, brain TH, and gene expression were analyzed.
