Deviations in Circulating TNF Levels and TNF Production by Mononuclear Cells in Healthy Human Populations

In vitro TNFα productions by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of elderly volunteers demonstrate significant interindividual differences in this group (a) based on the order of TNFα production (b) three subgroups can be distinguished: downregulated, intermediate regulated, and upregulated (c) no response to endotoxin (LPS) was found in upregulated and in the majority of downregulated groups (c, d), stimulated versus nonstimulated.
