Systemic Inflammatory Responses and Lung Injury following Hip Fracture Surgery Increases Susceptibility to Infection in Aged Rats

Serum cytokines levels after hip fracture and surgery. Rats were subjected to hip fracture and surgery (Fx + Sur) or anesthesia alone (sham). Animals were euthanized 1, 3, and 7 days after hip fracture and surgery, and blood was analyzed for the presence of IL-6 (a), TNF-α (b), IL-1β (c), and IL-10 (d) (𝑛=8 per group). Results are expressed as the mean ± SD. Analysis was done using one-way ANOVA with the Tukey post hoc test. *𝑃<0.001 when compared to other groups.
