Cigarette Smoke Suppresses the Surface Expression of c-kit and FcεRI on Mast Cells

Long-term exposure of mast cells to CSM inhibits cytokine production by mast cells. BMMCs (control, CSM, and LPS cultured for 4–6 days) were sensitized with DNP-specific IgE, followed by activation with dinitrophenyl-conjugated ovalbumin (DNP-Ova) for 9 h. The levels of cytokines IL-4 (a), IL-5 (b), IL-6 (c), IL-13 (d), and TNF-α (e) in the supernatants were estimated by ELISA. Data are mean ± SEM of quadruplicate samples. The asterisks represent significant differences between nonactivated and activated cells ( ).
