High-Mobility Group Box-1 Induces Decreased Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor-Mediated Neuroprotection in the Diabetic Retina

Levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) are significantly higher in the retinas of diabetic rats (D) compared with the nondiabetic control rats (N). Intravitreal administration of high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) induced a significant upregulation of the levels of TBARS compared with intravitreal administration of phosphate buffer saline (PBS).
