Effect of electrical field stimulation (EFS) on extracellular accumulation of purines in the LM-MP of control and inflamed rat ileum. The preparations were incubated with Tyrode’s solution for 15 min and then subject to EFS (5 Hz frequency, 3000 pulses of 1 ms duration). Samples collected from the incubation media were analysed by HPLC to separate and quantify purine nucleosides; ATP outflow was assessed using the luciferin-luciferase bioluminescence assay. Illustrated are ATP (a) and purine nucleosides (b) content of bath samples collected immediately before (Pre-EFS) and after (Post-EFS) LM-MP stimulation expressed in pmol/mg of tissue. Data are means ± SEM of an number of individual experiments. (one-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s modified t-test) represent significant differences as compared to control animals.
