Classification of long noncoding RNAs. lncRNAs (shown as red boxes) may be classified into five categories: sense lncRNAs, antisense lncRNAs, bidirectional lncRNAs (transcribed on the opposite strand within 1 kb from the nearest protein-coding gene), intronic lncRNAs, and intergenic lncRNA (transcribed between protein-coding genes, but they are located at least 1 kb away from the nearest protein-coding gene) [3].
