Nanoparticles or proteins are modified with specific surface ligands to be recognized by their receptors or cellular targets on a specific type of liver cells: (a) hepatocytes, (b) hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), (c) Kupffer cells (liver macrophages), and (d) liver sinusoidal endothelial cells.
