Effects of DHK on morphological changes (a), protein expressions of VEGF (b and d), and iNOS (c and e) in diabetic retinas. Seven days after injection of STZ, rats were orally administered for 16 weeks. At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed, and the right eyeballs were removed and then fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde in phosphate-buffered saline. Paraffin sections (4 μm) of the bulbus oculi were then stained with H&E or applied for immunohistochemical studies.
