Elevated Glucose and Interleukin-1β Differentially Affect Retinal Microglial Cell Proliferation

Exposure to IL-1β does not increase retinal neural cell death. Rat retinal neural cell cultures were exposed to IL-1β for 24 h, and cell death was evaluated by TUNEL assay. Representative images and quantification of the number of TUNEL+ cells upon IL-1β treatment are shown. Scale bar: 50 μm (a). To further evaluate cell death, retinal cells were labeled with annexin V plus PI and were analyzed by flow cytometry (b). MTT was used as a cell viability assay (c). The results represent the mean ± SEM of, at least, 4 independent experiments. , significantly different from control as determined by ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s post hoc test.
