Ocular inflammation has become a hot topic in ophthalmology, involving also several areas of medicine: internal medicine, surgery, basic research, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology, rheumatology, pharmacology, or laboratory. There are a lot of ocular inflammatory diseases in different locations, such as orbit, ocular adnexa, ocular surface, conjunctiva, cornea, sclera, uvea, retinal vessels, and optic nerve. Recently, it has become clear that some are assumed to be noninflammatory disorders, like age-related macular degeneration and macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion, and are dependent on some inflammatory mediators. Ocular inflammation is often also seen in patients with systemic inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, immunological therapy is being developed to assist the return of healthy ocular immune responses and immune privilege in the eye.

The special issue is focused on ocular inflammation, and manuscripts reporting pathogenetic, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of ocular inflammation which establish correlations with clinical manifestations are welcomed. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Mechanisms and mediators of ocular inflammation
• Biomarkers of ocular inflammatory diseases
• Novel diagnostic techniques in ocular inflammatory diseases
• Novel therapeutic approaches in ocular inflammatory diseases
• Novel therapeutic approaches in retinal vascular diseases
• Ocular surface infections
• Biofilm formation in contact lenses
• Macular edema and inflammation
• Inflammation of the optic nerve in neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis
• Novel immunomodulatory agents for ocular inflammation
