An Approach to Model Earth Conductivity Structures with Lateral Changes for Calculating Induced Currents and Geoelectric Fields during Geomagnetic Disturbances

Real parts of the induced currents flowing in different regions. The currents are represented by the curves with arrows. The horizontal conductivity boundaries are indicated by straight lines. These are results from a 2D FEM calculation. The density of the lines represents the magnitude of the currents. The currents will concentrate to the regions with relatively high conductivity values. The currents induced in the first layer of the Quebec structure are very small due to the low conductivity value of this layer.
