For each of the surface plots for the different hearing-impaired animals (a–c), the associated schematic of the ferret’s body surface shows the somatosensory receptive field(s) (shaded dark gray) encountered in that recording penetration. Note that in each case somatosensory receptive fields were located on the anterior aspect of the body (head, neck, and forelimb) and that they were predominantly bilateral (included both ipsi- and contralateral body surface).
